Program Information

Please Note: The dates for the April Workshop in Fort Lauderdale, Florida have been changed to April 29 and 30, 2005.

Hyderabad, India
February 10-15, 2005

The India workshop will be conducted in the style of a catalyst meeting. Thursday, February 10 and Friday, February 11 will consist of 90-minute sessions that will follow a formula of 10 -15 minutes from each thought leader framing the issue in that area followed by an hour of discussion from the floor. The sessions will be open to invited observers on these 2 days. Saturday, February 12 will be a closed session. This will allow the official participants to work from the information received the previous two days and, from there, begin to develop paths toward collaboration. Workshop participants will be visiting and observing the work going on at LV Prasad Eye Institute (Hyderabad), February 10, The Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (Hyderabad), February 11, Aravind Eye Hospital (Madurai), February 14, and Sankara Nethralaya Institute (Chennai), February 15.

Five themes will be presented and discussed at these workshops. For each theme, two thought leaders, one from each country, will lead the discussions:

  1. Molecular Genetics of Eye Disease - G. Kurmaramanckavel, MD / J. Wiggs, MD, PhD
  2. Clinical Aspects of Genetics of Eye Disease - A. Mandal, MD / I. Maumenee, MD
  3. Harmonization of Clinical Measurement Techniques and Terminology for Targeted Diseases and Structures -
    P. Nirmalan, MD / J. Seddon, MD
  4. Identification, Development and Exchange of Research Resources - G. Rao, MD / D. Zack, MD, PhD
  5. Translational Physiology: Bench to Bedside Applications - J. Biswas, MD / P. Kaufman, MD

Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA
April 29-30, 2005

The US Workshop will build on follow-up discussions occurring between the 2 workshops. Using the discussions and observations from the India workshop and site visits as a starting point, the US component of the program will work to identify viable collaboratibive opportunities and hone effective research models that take advantage of the benefits of collaboration. There will be large group general sessions and a number of smaller breakout working sessions dealing with the topic areas. Coming out of the US workshop, thought leaders will develop a vision document on the probable and possible impact of US/Indo collaboration on the future of vision research. This document will be published and widely accessible to the public.

If you wish to be considered for one of a limited number of observer slots at the US workshop contact Rhonda Williams. PLEASE NOTE: There are no expenses covered for observers.
